As the 4 November 2026 local government elections approach, the Church has an important role to play in shaping the future of our city. Through prayer, public witness, community action and responsible citizenship, we can move beyond frustration and help build a city that works for everyone.

TCN is joining the call to Save Our City by encouraging church leaders and congregations to stand together, hold leaders accountable, and inspire every eligible voter to make their voice count. Discover what the Church is doing and explore practical resources to help mobilise your congregation ahead of the elections.

What the Church is Doing to Get NMB Working

Across Nelson Mandela Bay, the Church is moving beyond the walls of its buildings to become an active force for good. We are shifting the narrative from frustration to responsible participation.

  • A United Public Witness: Church leaders from across the Bay have come together to launch A Christian Public Witness on the 2026 Local Government Elections. This is a united, non-partisan stance declaring that while the Church does not endorse specific parties, we are deeply concerned about the quality of leadership serving our people.
  • The “Save Our City” Initiative: We are publicly championing the truth that government alone cannot transform our city. Through “Save Our City,” churches, citizens, businesses, and community organisations are being called to take responsibility, hold leaders accountable, and become part of practical solutions.
  • A Voice in the Public Square: Christian leaders are actively shaping public discourse. Through regular columns in The Herald (covering topics from pastoral action to civic duty) and ongoing conversations on Kingfisher FM, the Church is bringing a biblical perspective to everyday civic life.

A Call to Action: Equipping Your Congregation to Vote

We need your voice to carry this momentum into your pews. As Danie Mouton recently highlighted in The Herald, our city will be shaped by those who vote. Staying away from the ballot box does not punish poor leadership; it simply leaves the decision about our city’s future to those who do show up.

Please use your platform this month to encourage your congregation to:

  1. Show up on November 4th: Remind them that participating in the democratic process is a practical expression of loving our neighbours and caring for our city.
  2. Vote on Character and Competence: Encourage voters to evaluate candidates and parties based on integrity, accountability, and a proven commitment to service, rather than just political affiliation.
  3. Remember Who is Watching: As William Leleki profoundly noted in a recent column, “When voting in secret, you are still in the presence of God.”
  4. Use Both Votes Wisely: Remind them of the importance of both the ward vote and the proportional representation (PR) vote in shaping local government.
