Secularists say, “The end of all being is the happiness of man.” The Bible says, “The end of all being is the Glory of God,” The two ends are diametrically opposed so you can only pursue one in your life, because the life-style you choose will determine the end or goal of your life. Lest anyone should think that happiness in general, is being rejected by me, we need to clearly define it’s meaning and understand it. Happiness is found in the emotions, is highly unreliable, fleeting and circumstantial, and it is subjective. This means that it is purely a matter of personal opinion, as to what brings happiness. So there are many people who do and say lots of things that make them happy, but are they right? Widespread humanism today believes that anything that makes you happy is okay. Nobody believes that murder or rape is right, except the perpetrators. What, then, makes the difference? The Word of God defines the difference between right and wrong by explicitly declaring it and implicitly testing it to reveal whether it brings glory to God or not. The final authority on matters of morals and ethics is the Word of God. So what does the New Testament say about happiness? Virtually nothing! But it does speak of joy over 100 times which is a much richer and better form of happiness and is approved of God. Joy is of the spirit and anything permitted by the Word of God will bring joy to your heart and glory to the Lord. That’s why you were created and, incidentally, explains why Bible-believing Christians cannot rejoice in just anything that makes some people happy. The end of our being is the Glory of God!
